Shopping in Jakarta can be a bit tricky if you don’t know where to start as a tourist. The Goods Dept Jakarta is a great place to get to know the local designers and get a glimpse of the local fashion scene.
As well as many of Jakarta’s shops, The Goods Dept is located in a few of the many city malls. It is a curated departmentstore, representing most of the leading and upcoming designers in Indonesia. Founded in 2010, quickly The Goods Dept became a platform for alternative fashion and lifestyle products. Today they count 3 (huge) stores in Jakarta and an online shop, not only selling awesome local designs but also hosting exhibitions and other creative related events. It’s to praise that there are initiatives like this in Indonesia who encourage the creatives and give them a stage.
WHERE TO FIND THE GOODS DEPT JAKARTA
Today (2017) you can find The Goods Dept. on 3 locations in Jakarta malls/ shopping areas – Pacific Place, this is the first physical shop that was openend. The second store is in Pondok Indah Mall, South Jakarta, it is a two-story shop and it houses a To-Go cake corner. They also have a section in Lotte Shopping Avenue, it features a wide selection of products from both local and international brands that are exclusive to this location. Almost half of the space is dedicated to THE GOODS CAFE, making it their biggest one yet.
WHAT WE THINK OF IT
When we visited The Goods Dept in 2013 , items by Cotton Ink – a label of 2 girl teenagers – were best sellers and visitors from all over the world noticed their designs as they visited Jakarta. That’s a great start for 2 young designers! One of the most special collections represented is the NikiCio one. Think space printed designs for last winter, very nice executed. The latest resort collection is online available now.
My personal crush is Milcah, an upcoming designer who is still twisting and turning to find her true style. But I love that about her. There is sort of a doubt and resistance in her work. Other crushes are Major Minor, who is famous for her material choices and shoe designer Naïma (not online yet).
On the jewelry department I fell in love with several pieces, but Frej I love the most! I love what they do, turning casual daily pieces into eyecatching jewelry.
